About this site
An independent guide to Utah family law, written by one attorney.
What this site is
DivorceCounselor.com explains how divorce, custody, child support, alimony, and property division work under Utah law, in plain English, with every rule cited and linked to the section of the Utah Code it comes from. It is not the website of a law firm. It sells nothing and runs no ads or trackers.
It exists because the questions people ask at the start of a divorce have real answers in the statute, and those answers should be readable without hiring anyone first.
About the author
I am John Murray, an attorney licensed in Utah (Utah State Bar No. 10966). I practice family law in Salt Lake City, Utah with Carlson Legal Group, and I write and maintain every page here myself.
What this site is not
It is not legal advice. The law described here is general; how it applies depends on facts I do not know about your case and on the judge who hears it. When those facts matter, get advice from a lawyer you have hired. Reading this site, or writing to me about it, does not make you my client.
How the content is kept honest
- Every statutory citation was verified against the Utah Code as recodified in Title 81 in August 2026, and each page shows the date it was last updated.
- Citations link to the Legislature's official text so you can read the law yourself.
- Corrections are welcome and acted on. Reach out.
